Solve for Tomorrow E-Recycling Challenge

October 1, 2014momstownFamily Life, School LifeNo comments
The Solve for Tomorrow E-Recycling Challenge is open to Calgary schools within the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School District. This is a program to bring awareness to the importance of e-recycling to keep these items out of our landfills.

Samsung Canada is bringing the Solve for Tomorrow E-Recycling Challenge to Calgary; previous programs have been organized in Edmonton and Toronto. Samsung is SO excited to help Calgary's schools and local communities learn about e-waste recycling through school activities and a collection challenge!

What is e-waste? E-waste, is defined as all types of unwanted electronics and electronic equipment.

The program is built around STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), and  strives to educate Canadian youth on the importance of proper e-waste recycling. This program has seen more than 300,000 pounds of e-waste diverted from Canada's landfills to be safely and responsibly disposed of.

So how does the challenge work?

  • Schools collect e-waste in their communities (each school collects for 7 days total) between Oct. 16 – Nov. 15. To get your school involved you can register HERE.
  • After the collection period pick-up of the e-waste is managed by Samsung Canada's sustainability partner, GEEP.
  • The e-waste is then weighed and school totals are tallied per school category (Category 1: 300 students or less, Category 2: 301 – 600 students, Category 3: 601 students or more)
  • In late November, Samsung will hold a prizing ceremony in which $40,000 in Solve for Tomorrow Technology grants will be awarded to the 3 schools (one winner per category).

How do you get involved?

Share and talk to your children about the importance of keeping these items out of the landfills, then register your school HERE (or forward the link to your childs school), and finally send all your unwanted electronics you have at home with your child!

Solve for Tomorrow E-Recycling Challenge: Calgary October 2014

Samsung Canada is committed to supporting Canadian public education. Through its Solve for Tomorrow education initiatives, Samsung Canada proudly provides school technology grants as well as support in researching the barriers and opportunities for technology solutions in the classroom. Samsung started the Solve for Tomorrow education program in 2010 in North America to raise awareness and interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) subjects and demonstrate how they can positively impact our local communities. Through Solve for Tomorrow, Samsung also hopes to offer 21st century learning opportunities and help reduce the technology gap in classrooms.
