I have 3 healthy happy girls, but there was a time when all that should have been were smiles and snuggles but that was a far reality.
My second daughter came roaring into this world on Feb 17 2006 and the week of Feb 27 2006 will be one I will never soon forget. My older daughter was in preschool and bringing home all sorts of germs and colds and with all the warnings of RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) going around, I overlooked it thinking it won't affect us … was I wrong.
For 4 days I was in a walkin or my Doctors office with my almost 2 week old as she was coughing, sneezing and had a runny nose. At each appointment they mentioned RSV again and again and that while she didn't have it YET it can come on in the blink of a eye.
My oldest daughter was in her room playing, Marissa my newborn was due for a nap and so I put her in her bed on her back and she fell asleep rather quickly or so I thought. You know that deep down pit in your gut feeling that something just isn't right? I couldn't shake it so I decided to peek in on her.
To my horror she was blue around her mouth, greyish looking skin, and I screamed, grabbed her and she threw up all over the place.
Fast forward … Upon arriving at the Children's hospital they rushed us in and to my horror was told her oxygen level was at 50% and she had a confirmed RSV case….oxygen levels lower then 90% are considered dangerous. After 2 weeks in ICU and Isolation and many rounds of tests I got to take my baby home.
Beside her cold symptoms her breathing seemed normal to me through it all. Had I known about this movement monitor by Levana I would have been alerted to her lack of regular abdominal movement and acted sooner.
Please note that while the Levana movement monitor can not prevent SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrom) or other breathing related illness such as RSV it would have given me alerts far sooner then when my gut instinct took over and I decided to peek in at my little one.
