Small Business Week 2014: Mandala Art Centre and Preschool
Owner: Jade Powers
Years in Business: 1.5
Why did you start your business?
"The number one reason Mandala Art Centre was created to fill the need for the arts in the NE of Calgary. There are a ton of sports and physical activities to do out this way, but nothing to do with the arts. I also created the centre because I wanted a place where everybody was welcome regardless of ability. As a completely inclusive centre for the arts, we are able to cater to people with a wide variety of needs to offer programming to kids, teens, adults and seniors. With a Masters degree in Art Therapy and 12 years of experience in working with adults and kids with autism, I knew that the arts were the level playing field for people who gravitate to being artsy. My hopes have been to create groups where people can come and work on art at their own pace and in their own time, while creating relationships with others and working on self esteem in a way that is not intrusive and that is fun!"
What do you love most about being an entrepreneur?
"Good question…Ive had this vision for a centre for the arts since I graduated in 2006. In my undergrad as a Social Worker, I was always jealous of the Art Therapist, who got to have fun with the clients. I wanted a job where I could have fun, be creative and bring smiles to people's faces. My husband and I have built this business all on our own and have really tried to stay true to our original mission statement – to be a barrier free studio space which will be open to all with a specialization in creating success based programming for individuals with a wide variety of abilities."
