As the momstown Calgary owner I have the privilage to be part of a larger team then just my local, regional team and twice a year all the momstown owners converge and meet together for a conference to strategize, support, learn and celebrate our success'. Having just returned from Fern Resort in Orilla Ontario, this was a confernece was full of unexpected learning lessons when we didnt realize it and all with the same underlying message …. its all about teamwork and having a strong team all working toward one common goal.
At this conference we held our first Amazing momstown Race where we were grouped into teams with people we don't typically see or chat with on a day to day basis to work through obstacles and challenges…… now what did we learn?
Competition: It is in us all, and when we heard the word race.. game was on! Competition is a great motivator for your business whether it is big or small it is there.
Know your own strengths: During our 'Amazing Race' we were given clues in which as a team we had to split up the activity and deide who was doing what and FAST – or so we thought. Do you know your strengths? When put in a fast decision situation it was clear who had strong leadership skills, who is organized, who is a detail person, and who is the rule follower. All are great for different aspects within your business', it is just a matter of learning to strengthen those skills that are not dominat.
EASIER together: Whether it is your own personal team or if you are part of alarger team, things run smoother and easier when you know your strengths and utilize them.
Have a process: Become familiar with what your teams strengths are and utilize them! While many skills can be taught it is easier to focus on the strengths to excel your business and leanr the rest along the way. Having a team to balance each other out and create a full circle skill set will prject your business further then trying to focus on your "weakness'"
Perception: At the lead of the pack thinking your the winner is not always the case… remember that saying "slow and steady wins the race". We found this out as all rushed through the challenge only to get to the end to find out it wasnt all about who crossed the finish line first.
Understand the rules of winning: This is quite simply put – read the instructions.
As we worked thorugh the conference we learned about our personal strengths, learned about the best practices from each chapter owner, learned what is coming that we need to work together on as a team to make it sucessful and lastly how to build a great team foundation for your business as even though we are entrepreneurs we are definitly not in this alone!
A big THANK YOU to our conference sponsors: Fern Resort for hosting us, Walmart Canada for all the snacks and goodies to keep us going, Amarula for the perfect additioon to our busines book club discussions, Hot Wheels Canada for the gifts for the kids, and Now For Mothers Healing mix which I will be passing onto some of our expecting momstown mamas!
